"LIGHT UP THE DARKNESS.."
At The Opes Group, we see firsthand that traditional capital markets do not always meet our clients’ needs. That is why in our professional lives we explore alternative markets in order to find the most fitting solutions for our clients. Similarly, in our personal lives we see that government bodies and markets are not always able to solve social issues. We believe in the power of community service and volunteering to meet important needs that may not be adequately addressed in our current social system. We believe that those who want to make the world a better place must be the agents of the change they wish to see.
Our team members support a range of interests that all serve to improve our social fabric. In the United States we have worked with and/or supported the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, City Harvest, Habitat for Humanity and Echoing Green to name a few. Internationally we have volunteered with orphanages in West and South Africa and with community organizations in Jamaica. It is important to us to support organizations that make a tangible difference in people’s lives and we have seen firsthand the direct impact of these groups in saving lives, nourishing and housing the less fortunate and providing sustainable economic and social solutions.
Larger organizations are well known and benefit from myriad sources of support but smaller organizations are often not able to attract the talent and resources that they require to grow. The Opes Group is working to address this imbalance by dedicating its resources and expertise to support a small organization every year.
Last year we worked with a non-denominational organization on Long Island to apply for various grants and to work towards acquiring a building to find a home for their after-school program for juniors 13 years old and under. Our next project is a little more fun but nonetheless quite important.
Our team member Melissa Sadler committed to running the New York Marathon as a means of raising funds for Team for Kids (“TFK”). Why? Team for Kids supports NYRR Youth Programs for more than 200,000 children in over 400 schools and community centers across the United States. For many of these students, programs supported by TFK are often their only opportunity for exercise and sports. NYRR Youth Programs have been recognized by Partnership for a Healthier America and First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign as a leader in the fight against childhood obesity and health issues.
When Melissa told us about her goal, our team here at The Opes Group was behind her 100% of the way. Below are photos from a recent fund raiser we held at Spur Tree Lounge on the Lower East Side in June 2015. Funds raised from the event were fully donated to TFK. TFK has raised more than $40 million since 2002. If you would like to learn more about the program and contribute please visit their website.
Below please meet Melissa and learn about her love for running and TFK. If you've been inspired to help then lace up those sneakers! Or better yet, open those wallets!
